The Føvling gravestone

The Føvling gravestone is a gravestone from around 1100-1250. It was found in 1638 on a grave in Føvling cemetery, where it was subsequently erected in 1857. The stone is now stored in the porch of Føvling Church. It is made of granite and is 210 cm high, 68 cm wred and 33 cm deep.

The inscription, written in Latin and with medieval runes, reads: „P. Æsbærn hic Langsum cubat in Christo requiescens.“

Translated, the inscription reads:

Here rests in Christ Fr Esben Langsom

(P = Provst/Pastor/Pater?)
